Zimbabwe - Definitives

|
In April 1980 the Republic of Zimbabwe came into existence -
its first set of definitive stamps were issued in the same month,
and used as their basis the 1978 Rhodesia issue covered here featuring gemstones, animals
and waterfalls.
One value, the 40c value featuring Bundi Falls, was a new value,
issued on 14 March 1983. Other than that, and aside from the change
of name, the stamps were identical, were designed by Neil O.
Pederson (gemstones and wild animals) and David Myles (waterfalls),
and were printed by Mardon Printers in Salisbury.

Tanzania - Roland Hill
Aniversary
21 April 1980
4 values in total, 1 value featuring giraffe
1 minisheet featuring giraffe
|
Image not yet available
|
A slightly confusing issue, this one, in terms of when it was
actually issued. Sir Rowland Hill died on 27 August 1879, which
would mean that an issue celebrating the centenary of his death
would have been issued in 1979. Stanley Gibbons, however, list the
issue date as being 21 April 1980.
Either way, the issue is comprised of four stamps, and a minisheet
featuring the four values on a background of the flag of Tanzania.
Each of the stamps features an old stamp from Tanzania, and the
third of the four values features the 25c giraffe stamp from the
1922 Tanganyika Definitives which can be found here. Details of the various
colours, values and catalogue numbers can be found in the complete list.
The issue was also released with an overprint to commemorate the
London 1980 Philatelic Exhibition

This issue features various Disney characters with various African
animals - the 100F value features Mickey Mouse checking the
heartbeat of a giraffe with a bandaged neck.

|
Another definitive issue from South West Africa - the third, in
fact, the first being the 1954 issue detailed here, and the second
not featuring giraffes and thus not covered on this site.
The stamps feature various paintings of wildlife done by the artist
Paul Bosman. Stamp websites do feature four other values (the 11c
Blue Wildebeeste, 12c Buffalo, 14c Caracal and 16c Warthog) that do
not seem to form part of the official set - any information on why
these are not included in the main set of 17 stamps would be
gratefully received by email to info@giraffestamps.co.uk. In
addition there are three so-called "coil stamps" - a 1c value
featuring a meerkat, a 2c value featuring a monkey of some
description, and a 5c value featuring a baboon.

Another issue from Tanzania - this time a set of 14 wildlife
definitive stamps featuring a painting of the animal along with its
name in Latin, English and Swahili.
The issue was printed by John Waddington Limited - a producer of
playing cards, packaging and stamps, amongst other things, from
Kirkstall in Leeds, England. The stamps were also issued with an
"OFFICIAL" overprint in around 1984 or 1985.

|
An issue produced to commemorate the 60th aniversary of the
Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Parks, two of Tanzania's most
famous parks, which were created in 1921. The lowest of the four
values, the 50c, is for the Ngorongoro and features the crossed
heads of two giraffes in the middle of an emblem representing the
park - the other values, in ascending order, feature a gazelle on
the 1s and 5s stamps, an a rhinoceros on the 20s.
The series was reissued in 1985 with an overprint to commemorate
the 75th anniversary of the Girl Guides organisation - the
overprint is silver on the giraffe value, and black on the
remainder (as the giraffe value is predominantly black
itself).

as its theme endangered animals, in this case from Mozambique. In
ascending order of value the stamps feature a giraffe, an antelope,
an aardark, a python, a turtle, a stork, another stork, and a
bustard.
This is the first issue from Mozambique to feature a giraffe for
almost 50 years, the previous one having been the 1937 issue.

giraffe on the second-highest value, and an ostrich, an oryx, a

The issue was designed by a "J. Caffe", although I have no
information as to who this may be, and was printed by Cartor
Security Printing in France. Any further information would be
gratefully received by email to info@giraffestamps.co.uk.

The stamps were designed by the British artist Rita Fennessey, who

were printed by the House of Questa, a firm founded in 1966, and
which continued in existence until taken over by the MDC
Corporation of Canada in 1996.

Vietnam - Animals

8 values in total, 1 value featuring giraffe

|
Vietnam (one of the finest countries in the world) makes a late
entry into the giraffe-related postage stakes with this issue, its
one and only, on the theme of wild animals. To be frank, they're
not the most attractive stamps ever issued, but there's a certain
kitschy charm about them. And they're cheap - a mint set will only
set you back a few pounds or so (as ever, more complete details are
available in the complete
list).

Central African
Republic - Animals of Central Africa
22 January 1982
6 values in total, all featuring giraffe
6 minisheets, one featuring giraffe
|
Image not yet available
|
A set of six stamps on the theme of the wildlife of Central
Africa - each of the six values also had a corresponding minisheet
featuring a further picture of the animal in question. In ascending
order of value the animals featured are elepant, giraffe, addax,
ocapi, mandril and lion, with those two highest values being
airmail stamps.
Unlike the subsequent Central African Republic issue a few years
later (featured here), I have no
information on the designer of the stamps as there is no name
given.

Nigeria - 75th Anniversary of

Another entry from Nigeria (its sixth so far) - this time to
celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Scouting Movement. Admittedly
the giraffe, which features on one of the two stamps, is quite
small, and it is a borderline decision to give it its own entry
rather than merely mention it as an also-ran.

1982
13 values in total, 1 value featuring giraffe

Another wild animal issue from Burundi (following on from its
issues in 1964 and 1971). This issue features thirteen
values featuring (in ascending order) lion, giraffe, rhino,
buffalo, elephant, hippo, zebra, warthog, eland, jackal, cheetah,
wildebeeste and hyena.
For some reason which, as yet, I have been unable to ascertain, the
stamps have exceedingly high catalogue values, starting at £5.00
for the lowest value and ascending to £95.00, £100.00 and £120.00
for the top three values. In total a mint set catalogues at
£633.25!
The issue was reprinted and re-released in the following year with
the WWF's (as it was then) panda logo.

Europafrique stamp detailed here.
The stamp features a carving, the heads of two giraffes, and a map
of Cameroun showing its capital, Yaounde. Details of catalogue

Uganda - Wildlife at a watering

22 August 1983
5 values in total, none featuring giraffe
1 minisheet featuring giraffe
|

|
An issue from Uganda themed around wildlife at a watering hole
- a theme to be repeated six years later here. This is a less impressive set than
the subsequent one, with four stamps featuring elephants (with the
WWF logo, branding it as a WWF issue) and a fifth stamp as part of
a minisheet, with the stamp featuring zebras and the background of
the sheet featuring giraffes - but no WWF logo. It's slightly
strange, as though the zebra stamp was not part of the set, as
certainly on eBay one sees the four elephant stamps or covers sold,
but little mention of the fifth minisheet.

from a fire, and the second features rangers protecting animals
(also including a giraffe) from poachers.
The stamps were designed by a local artist, Leon B. Kandogo-Kongou,
and a Belgian artist (slightly surprising given the CAR's French
heritage) Oscar Bonnevalle, well-known for his stamp designs.

An interesting issue which harkens back to the Nyassa and
Mozambique Companies, who controlled territories in what would
later become Mozambique. Two of the stamps feature stamps from a
1918 issue by the Mozambique Company (Companhia de Moçambique),
whilst the other two feature stamps from the Nyassa Company
(Companhia do Niassa) 1901 issue which starts this website here, and one from the 1924
Postages Due series from Nyassa covered here. The latter value features
a giraffe, the former a zebra.

each of the four values picturing various endangered animals from
Tanzania. In ascending orde the animals featured are an oryx (5s),
a giraffe (10s), a rhino (20s) and a cheetah (30s).
I believe that the stamps were printed by Holders Press, but have
no information about whether this was a Tanzanian company or
otherwise. As with more modern stamp issues, there is little or no
information available about who the designer of the stamps was, and
the custom of having stamps created by famous engravers appears to
be slowly dying out by this stage.
